When using gtk I'd suspect the easiest would be to build a tiny app for 
this (i.e. have the menu run as separate process) instead of trying to 
use some gtk in the current c++ client.  Or build the menu using the 
cegui toolkit, i.e. have it as some kind of overlay over the guest screen.
