Hi,

while we're at it, what about merging ChangeLog and NEWS into one file
and using markdown here as well?

Gitlab seems to favour ChangeLog over NEWS, so if you click the
"CHANGELOG" button at [0], the ChangeLog file is shown which does not
contain the latest updates.
