Understood, I was mislead by the little change in the libebook version
numbers.

Well, the packages from his PPA install fine on a Debian machine. The
sync-ui starts correctly.

Now, on the PC which has Evo 3.8, I'd like to make some kind of sync
test, just to check everything is OK. I don't want all my data on this
PC, and I'm reluctant to install Evo 3.8 on my production PC because it
would be hard to go back in case of a problem.

I'm thinking of creating a dummy Funambol (e.g) account; is there a
simpler way?
