Yes, what is happening here, is that the linker used by the OP does not 
default to "-Wl,--no-add-needed" (notice different from --as-needed, and 
currently called --no-copy-dt-needed-entries) , however current version 
of gnuld and gold DO have --no-add-needed/--no-copy-dt-needed-entries by 
default.
