How about just adding a background to the magnifying glass, if zooming 
is intended?

This would be a clearer visual distinction I believe, than changing the 
direction of the handle, which will rather confuse people, as I've seen 
the magnifying glass in search boxes, floated to the left, with handle 
change for aesthetic reasons.
