Q1. There are other apps, primarily Adobe products (Illustrator &
Photoshop).  But they render svg files at poor quality.  I wouldn't
recommend it.  As for open source Linux programs besides Inkscape...
I''m not sure there are any.  Stick with Inkscape.  I'm still trying
to get used to it, but I have to say it's pretty nice.
Q2. Let someone else answer it.  I don't know. :(
