In your Gabble git tree, try:

   git submodule update
   cd lib/ext/wocky
   git revert 891dfc76
   cd -
   make

And then see if you can authenticate. I suspect this recent change to 
Wocky's DIGEST-MD5 implementation: 
<http://cgit.freedesktop.org/wocky/commit/?id=891dfc76>.
