It sounds like you're not testing a major use case that's most annoying:
changing directions without lifting fingers. By that I mean moving right then
left, or up then down. Hysteresis seemingly breaks this use case the most. Is
that intentional?
As I understand it, this relates to the observation that drawing small circles
results in the cursor moving in a square. Because that demonstrates both axes
changing directions. This use case I suggest also directly relates to trying to
target a button with your finger.
So I feel your request might miss the issue...?
