I have been dreaming of using AC_PATH_PROGS_FEATURE_CHECK as well, but
for xorg the
lowest common denominator for autoconf is 2.60 and automake 1.9. 

I am very curious as to what did not work well. I'll update my little
test plan to make sure everything is covered.
Obviously I don't have all the platforms, so I have to fake some
conditions.

Thank you very much for doing this awesome research. Yes, the new name
is perfect.
I'll try your patch anyway and look at the differences.
