I recently needed some desktop specific stuff from the java side
to get appropriate applications/actions/commands and the mimetype for
files. I used the fd.o specs and mimetype definitions for this purpose.

What i have is some code to get mimetypes of files/streams and an
extension to Sun's Java Activation Framework using .desktop files to get
commands.

Probably the same stuff you wrote ;)
