mime-type icons, a proposal

First of all thanks for the really good overview of the issues related
to mime type icon theming. 

I really love you acknowledge the need for generic type theming. The
current symlink hell for theme authors is a true obstacle.

As for osX and application pushed mimetype themeing mentione in the
thread - there isn't a concept of icon themes on osX as far as I know.
And as a theme author I'd see this generating way too many combinations
for theme authors to deal with (multiple variations of the same mimetype
per app?). 

I don't think icon themeing is something we can stop dealing with. One
possible solution that may be bearable for theme authors would be
emblem-like icon compositing. Have a document base, have a mime type
overlay and am application association overlay. But that sounds over-
engineered.
