I brought this up in a bug that markmc closed this week:

He suggests discussing it here, so I am. KDE has a scientific 
applications category and the like, so I don't see how my bug wasn't 
Gnome-specific.

Is this actually an xdg issue when the category actually exists in the 
freedesktop spec and just isn't implemented in Gnome?
