Hello,
Last year, I discovered the user xattrs on Linux. I initiated a wikipedia
page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xattr), which has grown quite a lot
since then. I also wrote a short article on the subject
(http://peltkore.net/~vegard/xattr.html). At the time, which you will
notice, I did not know about the Beagle project.
Today, a freedesktop page called Common Extended Attributes
(http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/CommonExtendedAttributes) caught my
interest.
I would like to propose a more formal discussion around the standarization
of attribute names and usage, which could eventually lead to a draft or
memo of sorts (freedesktop standard, RFC, etc). Is anybody interested in
participating in such a project? If so, I believe that we should set up a
project webside, a dedicated mailing list, and a version-controlled
document containing the current work. It would probably also be useful to
have an index of programs utilizing extended attributes, plus any patches
for existing programs.
To quote Pat, this is a unique opportunity to standarize the use of
extended attributes.
