1) If you append to search path:

Not really as $prefix/share/themes/hicolor still has the precedence
and any other app could just override your icon by placing a file with
equal basename there.

2) If you prepend the search path:

Not really as you get no theming at all and you could just use
$prefix/share/pixmaps as well.
