Right - we've written a printf parser in javacc to manage exactly that,
along with a more relaxed version, for use during progressive syntax
highlighting in our xliff editor...
(we found during the editor implementation that it does still does
unfortunately need to know about the formatting of different source file
types, which is a pain, and not very much in the spirit of the "hide
source format from translator", but it's definitely better than nothing)
