Under Gentoo sometimes xdm failed to start within boot sequence with:
tfoerste at nhh221 /opt/foldingathome/client1 $ head /var/log/Xorg.0.log
_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/nhh221:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6


More often however X continues and starts :

tfoerste at nhh221 /opt/foldingathome/client1 $ head -n 15 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/nhh221:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6
