ATI open source vs Catalyst phoronix benchmarks

That's understandable because there is no tiling and no DRI2 Swap on the
tested KMS machine. Both improve performance and both are probably available
in Mesa 7.2 (except that DRI2 -> DRI1). Feel free to rerun the tests with
the two, you might end up pleasantly surprised.
