I managed to solve the problems with freetype by rolling back to version 2.1.9
I also had to roll back fontconfig to version 2.2.3.

My advice to anyone who is going through the compilation (as I did) is
to stick to the versions suggested in
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/ModularDevelopersGuide.  The newer packages
dont always work.
