cvs: failed to create lock directory for `/cvs/xorg/xserver/xorg

When trying to access xorg/xserver in CVS I get:
cvs diff: failed to create lock directory for `/cvs/xorg/xserver/xorg'
(/cvs/xorg/xserver/xorg/#cvs.lock): Permission denied
cvs diff: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/cvs/xorg/xserver/xorg'
cvs [diff aborted]: read lock failed - giving up
I know latest code is in git. How can I do a cvs diff of my old stuff?
(I'd rather not do a "diff -pruN" of my CVS and GIT code since I have many
objects in there too.)
I am able to use CVS for various xorg/driver and other components.
