6.9.0 drivers no longer handle multiple cards?

Under XFree I used to have three monitors driven by three graphics cards (an
AGP Matrox G400 and two old PCI ATI Mach64 cards). I replaced the Matrox with
an ATI 9600 for which I had to upgrade to Xorg 6.9.0. Unfortunately changing
two variables at the same time I don't know whether the problem is a change in
behaviour in the drivers or whether it's a consequence of the different video
bios in the ATI card.

Either way, X seems entirely uninterested in doing anything with the PCI cards
now:
