Are you sure you are uploading the image data to the correct offset in
vram and that you've set the cursor to use that offset?  Perhaps you
are overlapping with a command queue or a offscreen pixmaps?

Do you have any idea why the vbe calls are failing?  It's hard to say
what might be causing this.  Is the source to your driver available?
That might provide some insight.
