Increasing refresh rate, and changing screen size.

My Dell E1505 laptop has a video out, to which I can connect an
external monitor. When I do so, the picture has a very low refresh
rate, and is a bit thin and tall for the monitor. I've googled the
following options in xorg.conf but as a beginner I'd rather if one of
the gurus from this list would be so kind as to construct the proper
syntax to put in xorg.conf for me. These are options that I've googled
that may be relevant:
HorizSync 31.5-48.5
VertRefresh 55-90
65.00 1152 1168 1384 1480 864 865 875 985 interlace
65.00 1024 1032 1176 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync
50.00 800 856 976 1040 600 637 643 666 +hsync +vsync
31.50 640 680 720 864 480 488 491 521
29.95 480 504 584 624 300 319 322 333 doublescan
My current xorg.conf looks like this:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1400x1050" "1024x768"
EndSubSection
EndSection
Note that the internal LCD is "1400x1050" resolution, whereas the CRT
needs "1024x768" resolution. Thanks.
