Sounds like the X server is wedged somewhere. Without a stack trace,
this will be very difficult to debug as I've never seen it do this (and
can't think of a place where it would wait forever in any case).

Yeah, the i855 can't tell if the external monitor is on or off; we
simply measure the impedence of the load to detect whether something is
plugged in or not.
