Detecting user inactivity

Hi guys,

I'm trying to detect when the screen blanks (user hasn't used the
machine for awhile), so I can reset the Webconverger kiosk via a bash
script.

I could do this with xscreensaver I think, though I'd rather just be
able to detect when the screen is blanked (dpms) by X. i.e. without
xscreensaver.

I see there is a bug related to this:

Though I am not sure how this bug is being resolved. Will it?  Still I
would like a solution for Debian's stable X.

Then I came across this resource:

Which mentions an X screensaver API which I can't find further
information about.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
