RandR support

I'm trying to use RandR to support multiple screens, instead of using
Xinerama.  Unfortunatly I can't seem to get RandR to recoginse more than
1 screen at a time, and havn't found any documentation on how to do this.

I'm trying to get this to work on an nVidia card (probably not a good
start), although if it works on a Matrox (G450) I'm happy to switch to
that (open driver, proprietary hal).  If there is no support for RandR
in the Matrox driver, I'm willing to try and hack it so it works,
presumably the changes in the Intel driver will point me in the right
direction, however any pointers to documentation would be nice.

Is there any general documentation on RandR - a spec or feature list, or
end user type stuff anywhere?

Is there a way (other than RandR 1.3) to be informed when DPMS is
enabled?  (I'm aware that you can poll, but I'd really rather not.)
