Problem with mplayer video display

In all likelyhood, mplayer is using the video overlay but VNC only
shares the primary framebuffer.

I suggest using "mplayer ... -vo x11" if you want it to work with VNC.
Other drivers may or may not work.

I have no idea regarding your second problem; the mplayer list would
be a better place to ask.
