I did just that a few weeks ago and did not have any major problems,
I followed the advice in the Modular Developers Guide:
    http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/ModularDevelopersGuide
and now "./util/modular/build.sh" is my friend and I like the modular tree.
Although automake and libtool make me a bit  queasy.
