Do you have the "mouse" driver in your xorg.conf?
     Identifier  "Mouse1"
     Driver      "mouse"  <===========  This is not needed if you use evdev.
                                        (Same for the "keyboard" driver.)

Try commenting out the entire "Input" section if you have one.
