There may be a way: modern browsers can display SVG images. Sure, this 
is *not* the way to go, as the most used browser do not meet this 
criteria, but this is not the problem, the problem is the size of 
release packages, we can have SVG *and* PNG on website and SVG *or* PNG 
on download.

Bur our mission is to promote the vector format...

However, providing separate packages for SVG and PNG is a win-win situation:
- win for us, as we reduce the load on the server and have better stats 
on what users want;
- win for users, as they can download smaller packages containing only 
what they want. The benefit for the PNG package is increased, as it can 
contain images of better quality.
