[SCIM] From a newbie: problems in running scim

Hi!

I'm moving my very first steps with scim, so bare with my unexperience.
I just installed scim in my Mandrake Linux 9.1 successfully.
Whwn I do: '$ scim', it starts regularly, then I open an editor,
say kwrite, and do 'Ctrl space', but scim doesn't start.
I also tried to open kwrite from terminal with:

$ XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM GTK_IM_MODULE="scim" kwrite

, but the problem remains.
Could anyone suggest what I am missing?
