It seems "export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM" wasn't enough to make it in 
Mandrake, but I've finally got it working with XIM.  Now it starts with X 
and I can type Chinese right away simply with ctrl + space in both gtk 
and qt applications!  It works great in OpenOffice Writer as well.
