Keith, 

you are right. We have several people here who have interacted with
the freetype folks in the past. Maybe they would volunteer to do
that. I'd also take responsibility however I feel we should first
discuss what we should ask them for and what we can offer to help 
them. 
It is not easy to always ensure full ABI compatibility. With the 
short release cycles of the freetype project there is not much 
time to give their code thorough testing.
