This has nothing to do with the composite extension; it's purely a 
convention issue between the compositing manager and applications.

Note that without a compositing manager, the new visuals work as expected 
with RGB values copied without reference to the extra (conventionally 
alpha) bits.

The main issue with using separate alpha pixmaps is performance; it takes 
an extra pipe through the hardware to merge this external alpha channel, 
and I have no idea if most hardware can even support it efficiently.
