User point of view (please simplify!)

Hi
After following for a lot this mailing list i am attempting
my first post...

I just would like to state my point of view about X as user
(user of xlib, ie programmer).

When i first used linux i wanted to write a very simple graphic
program (ie: display an animated julia set), and tried to do it without
Gtk/Qt/SDL, and i found the thing quite difficult. Now i would use
SDL and not even think about that :-)

I would like to know if there are any plan to change the X api or if only
extensions will be added.

If so, to use X at its full power will be VERY DIFFICULT, even for who wrote
the toolkit (very old thing like color management remains :-( ).
For instance, i wrote in my spare time a port of the Qt 3.1 library for
DirectFB, and even if DirectFB is still missing some important things for a
graphic library (like regions) the Qt/X11 source code is a hell compared to
Qt/DirectFB!

For instance i find Jon Smirl idea of and OpenGL based windowing system very
interesting, even if i think that opengl exposes to little of 2d hardware
(glDrawPixels?), hopefully OpenGL 2 will :-).

Please don't flame me, but isn't X api a bit too old?

Thanx
Maurizio
