I think if we go to /var, most livecd setups will already exclude stuff 
in there from the image.

However, this does give up any chance of saving the uuid across reboots.

If we want to keep that chance, we might stick to /etc and just figure 
the higher-quality livecd builders will get it right eventually, 
especially if any apps start to rely on it.
