I think the most likely place to find good help on integrating totem
and gstreamer into your distro would be one of the debian lists
(though I'm not a debian user so I can't say which of them might be
most useful).

Aren't there pre-built .debs available to do this for you?  I would be
surprised if there weren't, though for debian stable they may not be
very current.  :)

Failing a good debian list, the gnome-users list may be able to point
you to a solution.

Of course, I'm new here, so I don't know that you won't get perfect
help right here.
