Ok, in the spirit of reducing the scope of the problem, I will stick with
testing off the dock. I will remove the nomodeset parameter and I will try
booting into init level 3 and I'll observe what happens.

I will try to validate whether it responds to ping and/or ssh but that is
harder for me to do with my setup so it might take me a bit longer to do that.
