ok, when I boot into init level 3 with "nomodeset" removed from the kernel
line, the system boots up and I get my command prompt. After logging in I found
that the system services were up (networking stack, etc...).

Next question...you mentioned that the dock hardware won't work due to the DP
hub not being supported. That's a pain. However, the laptop has a VGA port and
a DP port port built right into the side of it. If there's any way that I can
use either of those ports for my displays combined with the dock for power and
USB keyboard/mouse then that might be a workable setup for me.
