Sorry, I looked at your config/logs but couldn't find any hint.

Does it work if you start X without gdm (using "startx")?
Do you run a gnome session? If so, maybe try another WM, I had problems 
(crashes) with twm, but e17 (for example) works fine.

I just can't believe this is true. Admittedly, I'm running older 
versions (Xorg 1.8, nvidia 173xx drivers) on my desktop with 
displaylink+nvidia, but I've also seen it running on Xorg 1.9 
(displaylink or fbdev, but still with nvidia 173xx). It's not perfect, 
but it doesn't crash either (I've posted my discoveries some weeks ago, 
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libdlo/2010-November/000807.html).
