I have a Sewell USB-to-DVI adapter
(http://sewelldirect.com/USB-to-DVI-External-Video-Card-High-Resolution.asp)
which is based on the DisplayLink technology. I tested it first on my
windows desktop (works great on the 1600x1200 second monitor). Now I'm
trying to get it running on my linux desktop (which I want to make my
primary computer from now on).
It's a 3-year old Dell with a pretty vanilla install of Ubuntu 9.10 (I
bought it after Dell first announced availability of PCs shipped with
linux.) I followed the instructions I found here:
http://mulchman.org/blog/?p=21
Everything compiled and installed with no warnings/errors, but after the
reboot, the second monitor showed no signs of life. I poked around and
eventually noticed that there were no fb devices under /dev:
root at dell:~# ls -l /dev/f*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 2010-02-22 13:04 /dev/fd -> /proc/self/fd
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 7 2010-02-22 13:03 /dev/full
crw-rw-rw- 1 root fuse 10, 229 2010-02-22 13:03 /dev/fuse
I websurfed for a solution, and ran across this page:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-652038.htm
I followed all the steps, but again, no luck. I've now spent hours
trying out little things that I saw referenced on various pages during
my searching, with zero change and zero knowledge acquired.
Anyone have any idea why this isn't working for me?
