Hi Bernie and others,
I've solved the issue, thanks to the  pointer to look back at the software 
stack. CorePointer vs. SendCoreEvents options in X conf appeared to be the issue.

man xorg.conf says that CorePointer and CoreKeyboard options are deprecated and 
to use SendCoreEvents instead. Doing this caused the CPU load. Restoring back to 
the CorePointer/CoreKeyboard options made the CPU load go away.
