I have a similar issue, I just borrowed a 32" LCD TV (Medion/Tevion MD31132)
(Aldi, 999,- EUR, not too great quality but ok for me) which unfortunately
only supports 4:3 modes on the analog RGB input (DVI to VGA adapter). The
manual says it also accepts 1280x720 at 60, 1280x768 at 60 and 1366x768 at 60 but if
I try those the TV just says "invalid mode" although it also says H:36 V:60
which would be valid timings.

This means I can only use 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 etc. and the
monitor stretches it to 16:9. Now of course if I just run X the picture is
horizontally streched. If I mplayer a movie, it is also stretched.

Is there a parameter somewhere a) in xorg.conf and/or b) in mplayer where I
can tell it the picture is wider than it really is so it will display the
contents with the right aspect ratio?

Ethan
