Well, your xorg.log shows it detects the monitor:

(II) VIA(0): Ranges: V min: 56 V max: 75 Hz, H min: 31 H max: 60 kHz,
PixClock max 80 MHz

It ends up using this graphics mode:
(**) VIA(0): *Default mode "1024x768": 65.0 MHz (scaled from 796.0 MHz),
48.4 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(II) VIA(0): Modeline "1024x768" 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777
806 -hsync -vsync

You dont have any modelines in your xorg.conf Device section, where did it
get that? Maybe it's using different config files than you think?

I dont know if the hsync and/or vsync polarities are correct, my modelines
dont have any.

These modelines work for me on a Unichrome CN400 chipset:

#Refresh Rate 60Hz
Modeline "1280x720 at 60" 73.78 1280 1312 1592 1624 720 735 742 757
ModeLine "720x480" 26.7 720 736 808 896 480 481 484 497
ModeLine "720x576" 32.7 720 744 816 912 576 577 580 597
ModeLine "848x480" 31.5 848 864 952 1056 480 481 484 497
ModeLine "856x480" 31.7 856 872 960 1064 480 481 484 497
ModeLine "1024x512" 41.3 1024 1056 1160 1296 512 513 516 531
ModeLine "1280x768" 80.1 1280 1344 1480 1680 768 769 772 795
ModeLine "1440x1050" 126.2 1440 1536 1688 1936 1050 1051 1054 1087

They are (almost) all for a 16:9 display but maybe you can try them anyway,
or search google for "unichrome modelines" to find more 4:3 examples.
