Yeah, I knew that AGP and DRM were necessary for XvMC.  Saw log
entries that seemed to indicate that XvMC libraries were being loaded
and assumed that what was preventing XvMC from working was DRM and AGP
not being setup.  Nevertheless, if it isn't working, it isn't working.
 It certainly is the case that I see garbage on the screen whenever I
use a video app that supports xvmc.

Thanks for the info.  Any reason to switch to Hardy?  Is the graphics
support any better?
