Tricky. In that state, I cannot switch to a virtual console. If I do, 
it also locks up. I can kill X (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace). It also locks 
up. The only option I have at that stage is to use kdm's menu to 
reboot the box.

The VESA driver does not support composite.When using VESA, all kwin 
effect options are disabled.
