 I have now updted the driver from the updates-testing repo and cleared all
 but three device options vis:
 {{{
 Identifier  "Card0"
 Driver      "openchrome"
 Option      "VBEModes" "True"
 }}}

 Performance is NO better - definitely still nowhere near the preformance
 with the F6 via driver.

 One datapoint I didnt mention before was that X crashed badly with
 glxgears. I was only able to recover with a power off/on cycle.

 Now glxgears crashes with the error lines:

 viaFlushDmaLocked called without lock held
 Aborted
 }}}
 Any ideas? Are there any other dumps I can provide to help resolve this?
