I don't have front/rear controls (looking at alsamixer, for example) - I
only have Master, PCM and LFE.
The system has three hardware speakers (L, R and LFE) but the sound card
is only 2.0 - the LFE channel is extracted from L+R inside the card. LFE
*does* have a separate mixer control though.
I am saying that final volume for my front speakers are the product
pcm*master, and the volume of the LFE channel is pcm*lfe.
And it does suck :-)
Before PA, I used to set GNOME to control PCM instead of master, and set
both Master and LFE to max. That worked well (as one would guess from the
above formulas). PA changed all that for the worse unfortunately.
