Assuming you have the a52 plugin library installed, this bug report here 
has a config that should work for almost any device, automatically:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=518384

However, it does not work for my HDMI, because a52 assumes subdevice 0, 
and my HDMI is hw:1,3 (subdevice 3).
