Yes. To run vdagent you will need virtio-serial driver.

What is slower specifically? have you tested the same qemu in both cases?
if you are using qemu and not qemu-kvm the speed difference could be just that.
Can you compare your newer qemu to the older qemu without spice?

What qemu versions did you use for each? or did you forward port spice 0.4 to
the current qemu?
