Hadn't tried, but I obviously should have :

On server start (no output):
fred at minifunky:~$ xrandr
 SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh
*0 800 x 600 ( 433mm x 271mm ) *60
 1 640 x 480 ( 433mm x 271mm ) 60
 2 1280 x 800 ( 433mm x 271mm ) 60
 3 1280 x 768 ( 433mm x 271mm ) 60
 4 1024 x 768 ( 433mm x 271mm ) 99 60
Current rotation - normal
Current reflection - none
Rotations possible - normal left inverted right
Reflections possible - none

None of the modes except the last one give me an output. But:

fred at minifunky:~$ xrandr -s 4

WORKS !

Excellent. Note that OS X seems to be able to generate output for other
resolutions, at least 800x600 (I haven't tried more, I've got to rush
right now).

If I can do anything to help you getting things right (except sending my
adapter :-)), just ask!
